Stop Smoking Forever

StopWhen you finally decide to take the plunge and quit smoking, you know that you are doing the right thing for your body. Unfortunately, even if you are strong and are able to quit smoking the first time, you might find yourself falling off the wagon at some point in the future. Once you internalize the long term benefits you will gain if you stop smoking forever, it should be easier to convince yourself to stay smoke free.

Even within an hour of stopping smoking, you will start to see the health benefits. They begin with your circulatory system. Smoking raises your blood pressure, but just twenty minutes after you last cigarette, your blood pressure begins to decrease. At the same time, your heart rate will return to normal. Smoking accelerates your pulse. Just think about the long term stress the smoking puts on your heart. As your heart rates returns to normal, your circulation will also improve.

Within the next two days of your last cigarette another batch of amazing changes happen within your body. One of the gases given off by a lit cigarette is carbon monoxide, a known toxin. In less than two days, all excess carbon monoxide will leave your bloodstream. This means that the proper level of oxygen will return to normal. Even in this short amount of time you chances of having a heart attack will decrease. This is simply because you are no longer continually stressing your heart. A very noticeable change that takes place in your health within the first two days is that you will be able to taste and smell better. The carcinogens in cigarettes stun the nerve endings in your tongue and nose. As soon as they are free from smoke they begin to re-grow and function at their usual level.

While these shot term benefits are great to encourage you to start quitting, it is more important to know what will happen when you stop smoking forever. Within one year, your risk of a heart attack is half as high as it was a year ago when you were still smoking. If you can stay smoke free for two years, it is statistically proven that you are incredibly likely to stay smoke free for the rest of your life. Even second hand smoke should incite cravings after two years.

The longer you are off cigarettes, the more your long term health prognosis will mirror that of a non-smoker. After five smoke free years, your chance of a stroke is the same as someone who has never smoked. After ten years, your chance of lung cancer or another respiratory disease has been cut in half. Fifteen smoke free years gives your heart the same health report as a non-smoker. Stop smoking forever is one of the best ways to achieve a long, healthy life.
